Overview

This interactive half-day masterclass explores patient (lived experience) leadership as a vital and often missing element of true co-production.

While co-production has become a widely used principle in healthcare and organisational development, leadership by people with lived experience remains marginal. This masterclass invites participants to explore how lived experience leadership reshapes traditional power dynamics, deepens participation, and enables more authentic collaboration and change.

The session will combine theoretical input, reflective discussion, and experiential learning within a group-analytic framework.

Learning Aims

By the end of the masterclass, participants will have the opportunity to:

  • Learn about the emergence of patient (lived experience) leadership as a key paradigm for health and beyond, and its role in true co- production and power transformation

  • Explore what people with lived experience bring – the “jewels from the caves of suffering” – and how these translate into authentic leadership qualities

  • Identify opportunities and roles for lived experience leadership, and consider it as a framework for career progression

  • Explore how lived experience leadership can be embedded in organisations and systems, and the support needed to thrive

  • Gain practical tools and resources to support participants’ next steps

  • Use reflective space to explore how to embed lived experience leadership in participants’ own contexts.

The group-analytic format provides a space to think together about leadership, authority, and participation.
