Block and Twice-weekly Therapy in Training: “East is East and West is West and Never the Twain Shall Meet”? Informing choice for Qualifying Course candidates

Date: Saturday 29 February 2020
Venue: Institute of Group Analysis, 1 Daleham Gardens, London NW3 5BY
Time: 10:00am – 14:30pm

The research project presented at this workshop was prompted by discussions at the National Training Management Committee after a formal request from a student accepted on the London QC to be able to undertake the London Training whilst remaining in block therapy. Since which time several other similar enquiries have been made.

It quickly became clear that although there were many views on the relative merits of the two forms of personal therapy, there was no objective evidence regarding this. A small working party comprising David Carter, Debra Nash, Andy Thomas, and Ewa Wojciechowska was convened in order to explore this further. The working group undertook a formal survey of members focusing particularly on the lived experience of twice-weekly and the block therapy approaches and considered the issues of comparability and equivalence of the two models.

The conclusion of the report will be presented, and participants will be invited to discuss the implications of these findings for our Training Community and the anomalies and dilemmas around the current position.
